It’s Time to Escape the Rat Race, for Good.
Remember when COVID flipped the whole working world upside down? Turns out, a whole bunch of folks actually liked working from home and decided to excape the rat race.
Let’s be real, commuting is a bummer. All that time in the car – it adds up. We’re talking hours and hours of your life every month disappearing into thin air, while you’re stuck in traffic. Want some free time back? Let’s ditch the commute, escape the rat race and talk side hustles and working from home!
The advantages to escpae the rat race and work from home are clear and a lot of people are refusing to go back to the office. And some of those that are being forced to, are taking control and starting a business from home.
The US Census Bureau shows that the average commute time increased from 27.6 minutes in 2019 from 25.0 minutes in 2006. I imagine that today, that time is even higher.
But 27.6 minutes to and from work each day comes to
- 55.2 minutes a day
- 276 minutes (4.6 hours) a week
- 1214 minutes (20 hours) a month
- 14,573 minutes (243 hours) a year
Looking at it another way, each year the average person that works for the someone else puts in an extra six 40 hour weeks (without pay) just going to and getting home from work.
That extra time without pay, reduces your hourly rate significantly. If you are making $30/hour, your effective hourly rate is only $26.67 if you work a 8 hour day.
Escaping the rat race and becoming self employed has never been more enticing, easier or more fulfilling than it is today.
With the improvements in technology and more focus on personal freedom, becoming self employed will continue to be a driving force in the world economy.
If you’re still on the fence about starting your own work from home business, here are five reasons why you should really think about it.
1. You Set the Rules
Businesses lay people off when the economy starts to go south. It’s a common practice, even with the biggest and best companies.
However, once you are self-employed you won’t get laid off. You always have the option of looking for more clients or subsribers and improving your revenues. The pendulum is swinging back. Prior to World War 2, the majority of working adults were self employed.
The trend to escape the rat race and work from home will only get more desireable and common place in the future. Don’t let this trend pass you by.
2. It’s Easier to Start
Starting an online business from home doesn’t necessarily mean that you need to buy a bunch of equipment or assets.
At-home businesses like affiliate marketing writing, graphic design, or video editing cost much less than other businesses do by their nature.
Therefore, unlike owning a franchise or some other kind of business, the start-up cash required to the online business costs a great deal less. This allows people with smaller budgets to enter the workforce as self-employed professionals.
If you’re starting an affiliate marketing business, you can get started for less than $100, sometimes much less. Learn how to get started for free, with this free training. Click here to get access.
3. Choose You and Your Business
Working for the man is a common joke of the average worker. Getting a job means that you’re putting money in someone else’s pocket over the long haul instead of yours.
However, working for yourself means that you’re putting time and effort into creating and building up your own assets. Starting an online business from home allows you to do just that.
4. Make a Part or Full-Time Income
Not all people are interested in starting an online business from home need to make a full-time income. Certainly, some do, but some people who start companies do so because they just want a few hundred extra dollars a month or they want some extra money to invest in retirement or their children’s college educations.
The beauty of an online business is that it allows you to work around your current work schedule. No need to ask your boss for time off to go to another job. You simply need to log onto your computer when you have some spare time and start working.
5. Pay Less in Taxes
Another reason why people think about starting an online business from home is for tax benefits. While many people know about some of the obvious write-offs like phone expenses or rent, there are others that people don’t really consider.
According to Entrepreneur Magazine, business owners can also deduct things like business travel expenses, association memberships, continuing education costs, and the costs of attending trade shows to name but a few.
Conclusions
If you’re one of the people who has thought about starting an online business from home, you’re in good company. Since COVID in 2020-2023, millions people have left traditional jobs and joined the self-employed. A little over 1 million people start a home business every year.
More people decide to work for themselves, from home than ever before. The benefits of self-employment continue to outweigh the disadvantages. Among them are tax breaks and the freedom to control your own destiny.
So, why not try self-employment, even part-time at first? It could be the best decision you make, in the long run, to do so.
